8. InArtS : International Art Sources

The research center InArtS aims to increase the knowledge of early modern sources for the art history of Urbino through the digitization of documents and the creation (or implementation) of corpora of documents on Renaissance artists such as Piero della Francesca, Raffaello Sanzio and Federico Barocci. The starting point of this research is the collection and analysis of known and unpublished documents (letters, notarial documents, literary sources, collection inventories); by linking these sources with historiography, the aim is to create a database that can both provide a framework for future research into Renaissance art in Urbino and place the work of these artists in a rigorous historical perspective.

  • The aim of this online corpus is to approach the work of the painter Federico Barocci (Urbino 1533 - 1612) from a historical perspective, revising the known sources, finding new ones and combining them with paintings and drawings. The capillary research in the archives is supported by a careful analysis of the literary sources and compiled in chronological order. As part of the Sanzio Digital Heritage project, the corpus is hosted on a dedicated platform that makes it possible to create a system of internal and external links that allows users to search for specific topics (people, places, decades or years) and immerse themselves in the world of Federico Barocci’s art.
